Sankat Mochan Temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This temple was founded by Tulsidas, the writer of Ramcharit Manas. At this place, Tulsidas had a vision of Lord Hanuman. Later, the architecture of this temple was built by the educationalist and freedom fighter, Madan Mohan Malviya in early 1900s.
“Sankat Mochan” literally means “one who alleviates sufferings”. Lord Hanuman signifies strength and power. It is believed that worshipping Lord Hanuman help eradicating sorrows and sufferings from one’s life. The idol of Lord Hanuman in this temple is made from “sindur” (vermillion). During worship, the devotees put sindur on this idol and also put it on their forehead. “besan laddoos” are given to and by the devotees as prasad. Lord Hanuman blesses his devotees with immense strength and power and also heals all the ailments in their lives. Lord Hanuman is worshipped to keep away from evil spirits. On the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti that is on the birth date of Lord Hanuman special event is organized to worship him. On this day, a procession is taken out on the streets of Varanasi to celebrate the birth of the lord. During aarti, devotees chant hymns of Hanuman Chalisa, Sundarkhanth and Kishkindha.
Since Lord Hanuman was born during the dawn, people worship Him the same time and hence the temple doors are opened from 5am in the morning till 9 pm at night. Devotees need not pay any entry fee to visit the temple.
