Infrastructure of Varanasi

Varanasi is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world with a rich history dating back to 3,000 years. Much of the city’s infrastructure, even today, echoes the basic civilization infrastructures that were prevalent centuries ago. Palatial buildings, narrow alleys, high stairway cases and the typical dome-shaped houses that were so common in our past centuries still occupies a large part of present day Varanasi.


The very popular ghats of Varanasi, however, have acquired a new face mostly owing to the huge number of unceasing pilgrims visiting the ghats daily. The staircases of these ghats or banks have been constructed in a more people-friendly manner and required provisions have be built to make bathing in River Ganga easier and safer.

Even though the city lacks organized infrastructure, Varanasi being a tourist city, is well-connected with other cities and states and boasts good air, rail and road transportation system. Four State Highways and three National Highways cross the city that connects Varanasi to north, east and north eastern states of India.

The 112.26sq km urban Varanasi comprises 7 urban sub-units:

• Notified Town of Benaras Hindu University
• Ramnagar Municipal Board

The entire management of the infrastructure of Varanasi is on the hands of two government bodies – Varanasi Development Authority and Varanasi Municipal Corporation. Proper maintenance of water and sewage is controlled by Varanasi Jal Sansthan, electricy by Uttar Pradesh Electricity Board and road networks by Public Works Department.

Varanasi can be segregated in three sections:

• Old City that includes the ghats, Chowk, Adampur, Kotwali area
• Central city or the new Varanasi bound by National Highway 2 on the western and northern side
• Peripheral Area that includes trans Varuna section of the city

The old city has a chaotic infrastructure of winding roads, narrow lanes and century’s old buildings. The central and peripheral regions are new, modern developed areas representing modern infrastructure of India.
