Kedar Ghat in Varanasi

Kedar ghat

The ghats or banks along river Ganges are the most active places in Varanasi. There are over hundred ghats in the city and each ghat has its own history and distinctiveness. One such famous ghat in the city is the Kedar Ghat.

Things to See at Kedar Ghat


No other ghats in Varanasi will present you with a more captivating view of sunrise and sunset as Kedar Ghat. This brightly coloured ghat, mostly popular among the Bengalis, is mostly a bathing ghat. Kedar ghat is the most picturesque ghat among all other ghats and undoubtedly the most photographed as well.

Adjacent to Kedar ghat is a beautiful Lord Shiva temple, known as Kedareswara temple, built in traditional Hindu architectural style. It is a common belief that any devotee who visits the temple gets his wish fulfilled after praying to the Lord.

There is a kund, named Parvati Kund located just near the ghat. This kund is said to have medicinal properties and can heal a number of diseases.

Varanasi-kedar-ghat

Shri Sringeri Shankara Math is located at Kedar ghat. This beautiful temple is a house to the shrines of Shri Adishankaracharya, Sri Maha Ganapati and Sharada Ma. This old temple got a facelift by Smt. Radha Rani Devi, Maharani of Burdwan. Devotees come here for the regular artis and on festive occasions like Maha Shivratri and Navaratri, the temple performed special prayers and is decorated with lights and flowers. The math also provides accommodation to pilgrims visiting Varanasi. There are 15 rooms in the math that comes with every basic facility.

Other sacred sites around the area are Tarakeswara and Vitanaka Narasimha temple.
